– HVA SKJER I MIN SLEKTSFORSKERVERDEN?

1940 census and Englewood Genealogical Society FL Inc.

1940 census and Englewood Genealogical Society FL Inc.

A couple of days ago, I got an e-mail from Sue, the president of EGSFl. She was contacted by FamilySearch, about the 1940-census. It will be released April 2nd this year, and will be a great new resource to use in our research for our relatives in the US.

As a member of the EGSFl I am invited to be an indexer, and I will actually consider that, it is really great that FamilySearch puts this out for free to everyone! The society’s members are invited to work with the census from Florida, because of local knowledge. But, actually I can see that if others wants to help indexing, they can contact FS here: FamilySearch and the 1940 census

132 million people were living in the 48 Continental United States in 1940. Around 50 of all those people, are relatives that I am researching, and maybe this census will give me the answer as to where they ended up?

New, interesting questions were asked:

  • Where people lived 5 years before (this is great, maybe I can find my great-grand-aunt)
  • Highest educational grade achieved (I don’t think she had any education, but, maybe?)
  • Detailed income and occupation (this is also very interesting, as I am wondering what my great-grand-aunt did for a living)

Even if the question was to the members of EGSFl, I know that FS also wants others to help indexing.

From FamilySearch:

Full, Free Access Is Coming

FamilySearch.org and its partners will start publishing the 1940 U.S. Federal Census for free on April 2, 2012, the day the census is released by NARA. FamilySearch.org will also provide digital images to tens of thousands of volunteers to start transcribing the records so they become searchable.
Complete publication of the index will depend on how many volunteers like you can help.
